Day 1: Favorite book. Explain why you like it.
Answer: Orosa-Nakpil, Malate by Louie Mar Gangcuangco.
So basically the story is about a person who belongs to the third sex and the things he experienced in theworld of Orosa-Nakpil in Malate, Manila.
I read the book during my freshman year. I remembered secretly reading it during our Science class, and almost get caught a few times. This book was recommended by a friend who enjoyed Filipino novels as much as I did.
This book taught me more than my Health teacher could ever do. The book showed great awareness about AIDS; that in any minute it can change you, and the persons around you. Normal health books would teach you boring-but-informative stuff that most of the time some students couldn’t care less. I’m not generalizing the whole ‘student population’, I said some- not all. It also shows how to prevent the said disease. It’s just like a normal health book- with a splash of love, hatred, and everything in between.
And up to now, I can remember the story like I read it yesterday. It left a mark on me, and a feeling which tells me that the world is a cruel place. Not being a pessimist nor anything, but we have to face the reality that at some point the world is cruel. Cruel in the sense that you should keep going, or it’ll eat you whole.
